Apple has announced the new Logic Pro 11 and Logic Pro for iPad 2. The new Logic Pro 11 incorporates the ever-present theme of artificial intelligence, introducing new studio assistants to support users during music production. New features include the Session Player, expanding on the well-known Drummer feature by adding a Bass Player and Keyboard Player; Component Separation, which allows users to extract and edit individual signals from an audio recording; and ChromaGlow, which aims to give tracks a warmer sound.
Apple Logic Pro 11 – Session Player
The Session Players in Apple Logic Pro act as an AI-based backing band. While Apple introduced the Drummer over a decade ago, the virtual Bass Players and Keyboard Players are now integrated into Logic Pro.
According to Apple, the Bass Player has been trained using advanced AI and sampling technology in collaboration with some of today’s best bassists. Users can choose from eight different Bass Players, adjusting their performance with controls for complexity and intensity, and accessing advanced parameters for slides, mutes, dead notes, and pickup hits.
Bass Player can jam along to chord progressions, or users can select from 100 Bass Player loops to find new inspiration. With the Chord Track, users can set and edit the chord progression for a song, and the virtual Bass Player will adapt to it. Additionally, the Studio Bass plugin provides access to six new electric and acoustic instruments, all inspired by current bass sounds and genres.
For the Keyboard Player, users can select from four different styles. Apple has involved numerous studio musicians in its development. The Keyboard Player can be used in various ways, from simple block chords to extended harmony chord voicings, with multiple variations. Similar to the Bass Player, users can set and edit the song’s chord progression on the Chord Track, and the Keyboard Player will play along.
The Studio Piano plugin offers further options to shape the sound, including adjusting three microphone positions, pedal noises, key noises, release samples, and string resonance.
Stem Separation in Apple Logic Pro
Musicians often perform best without the pressure of a formal studio session, capturing these moments in smartphone voice memos, old demo tapes, or live performances. These recordings can reveal the best performances, which are difficult to reproduce. Apple now offers Component Separation, which can split mixed audio recordings into four separate parts: drums, bass, vocals, and other instruments, directly on the device.
ChromaGlow
ChromaGlow is a new AI-driven feature in Logic Pro 11 that enhances tracks with five different saturation styles. This computationally intensive feature, for which Apple strongly recommends an M-chip, gives each track more warmth, presence, and punch. Users can choose between modern clean sounds, nostalgic vintage warmth, or more extreme styles, allowing them to tailor the sound to their taste.
Apple Logic Pro on the iPad 2
Since its release last year, Logic Pro for iPad has been enthusiastically received by users. Designed from the ground up to take full advantage of touch interactions, Logic Pro transforms the iPad into a full-featured DAW environment. The second version of the app includes the new Session Players, ChromaGlow, Stem Separation, and more, just like Logic Pro 11.
